Agniveers to Receive 2-Year Service Extension: Key Details

In a significant move, the government has approved a 2-year service extension for Agniveers, allowing 75% of them to continue serving beyond their initial 4-year term. This decision, announced by the Chief of Defence Staff, aims to provide relief to approximately 18,300 Agniveers whose terms are nearing completion. The extension is voluntary, with no pressure on soldiers to continue, and those who opt in will receive increased pay and allowances. The evaluation process for permanent induction will remain transparent, ensuring that performance and skills are duly recognized. This article delves into the implications of this decision and the timeline for the first batch of Agniveers.

Service Extension for Agniveers Announced

A significant development has emerged regarding the Agniveers, as the government has approved a 2-year extension of service. This decision allows 75% of Agniveers, who do not transition to the regular army after their initial 4-year term, to extend their service by an additional 2 years.

This announcement was made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General N.S. Raja Subramani, during a press conference attended by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The proposal received approval during a Union Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, effectively extending the total service period for Agniveers from 4 years to 6 years. This change is particularly beneficial for around 18,300 Agniveers whose terms are set to end between November and December 2026.

Revised Framework for Agniveers

Initially, the Agnipath scheme stipulated that only 25% of Agniveers would be eligible for permanent positions based on merit after 4 years, while the remaining 75% would be discharged. However, the government has now revised this policy to allow a 2-year extension for the 75% of Agniveers.

Eligibility for the Extension

The 2-year extension will be available to 75% of Agniveers, but the choice to opt for this extension will be entirely voluntary. No pressure will be placed on any soldier to continue for an additional two years. Those who choose to extend their service will benefit from increased pay and allowances during this period.

Evaluation Process for Extension

The government has assured that the evaluation process for both permanent induction and the extension of Agniveers will be transparent. Over the past four years, the performance, discipline, physical fitness, and technical skills of these soldiers have been consistently assessed, yielding positive results. According to the current policy, 25% of the top-performing Agniveers will be directly inducted into the armed forces. The remaining 75% who opt for the 2-year extension will also have the opportunity to apply for permanent induction into the regular armed forces after completing a total of six years of service, provided they meet the necessary criteria and pass the required examinations.

Completion of the First Batch's Tenure

The Agnipath scheme was initiated on June 14, 2022, and the first batch, consisting of approximately 24,400 Agniveers, was recruited into the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This group includes around 19,000 Agniveers in the Army, 2,850 in the Air Force, and 2,550 in the Navy. The first batch from the Indian Navy is scheduled to complete its four-year term on November 21, 2026, followed by the Air Force batch on December 21, 2026, and the Army batch on December 31, 2026.
