Agniveer Scheme May See 2-Year Service Extension for Personnel

The Indian government is contemplating a significant change to the Agnipath Scheme, potentially allowing Agniveers to extend their service by 2 years. This proposal aims to enhance career stability and increase the pool of experienced personnel within the armed forces. As the first batch of Agniveers approaches the end of their 4-year term, the implications of this extension could reshape their future career paths. The announcement is expected soon, and it could lead to a new classification of military personnel. Read on to discover the details of this proposal and its potential impact on Agniveers.

Proposed Changes to the Agnipath Scheme

Agniveer 2-Year Extension Plan: Significant modifications are being considered for the 'Agnipath Scheme,' which was initiated in 2022 for the recruitment of personnel into the Indian Armed Forces. The government is evaluating a proposal to extend the service of Agniveers by an additional 2 years beyond their initial 4-year commitment. The first group of Indian Navy Agniveers is scheduled to finish their 4-year term on November 21, and it is anticipated that this extension plan will be revealed prior to their retirement.

Current Service Structure

As per existing regulations, 25% of Agniveers transition into the regular cadre after their 4-year service, while the remaining 75% are released from duty. Should the new proposal be enacted, some of those 75% who would typically be discharged may be offered the chance to serve for an additional 2 years. According to reports, if this plan is approved, there will be three distinct categories of personnel within the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force: regular Agniveers, Agniveers with an extension, and permanent soldiers.

Completion Dates for the First Batch

When will the tenure of the first batch of Agniveers conclude?
The countdown has begun for the first batch of Agniveers to complete their 4-year service:

  • Indian Navy: November 21 marks the end of service for the first batch of Navy Agniveers.

  • Indian Air Force: The first batch of Air Force Agniveers will conclude their service on December 21.

  • Indian Army: The first batch of Army Agniveers will finish their 4-year term on December 31.

Implications of the 2-Year Extension

What will change with the 2-year extension?

If the government endorses the 2-year extension plan, the primary advantages would include:

  • Benefit of Experience: After 4 years of training, personnel gain substantial experience in military operations. An additional 2 years would enhance the armed forces' pool of seasoned personnel.

  • Increased Salary: In the fourth year, an Agniveer’s total compensation is ₹40,000 (with ₹28,000 in-hand). During the 5th and 6th years of extension, their salary and allowances could align more closely with those of regular soldiers.

  • More Time for Future Careers: An extra 2 years would provide personnel—by the age of 23–24—more time to prepare for resettlement, civil services, or roles in paramilitary forces.

Current Rules and 'Seva Nidhi' Package under the Agniveer Scheme

The Ministry of Defence introduced the Agniveer scheme on June 14, 2022.

Under the current system:
'Seva Nidhi' Package: Upon completing 4 years of service, an Agniveer receives a lump-sum amount of approximately ₹11.71 lakh (including interest), which is tax-free.

Insurance and Skills: During their service, personnel are covered by a non-contributory life insurance policy of ₹48 lakh, and upon discharge, they receive a 'skill certificate.' However, they are not entitled to a pension or gratuity.
