On various occasions, many lawyers have reported that there is actually no adequate laws for rape in India. The process takes a lot of time and the conviction rate is very low. Total rape cases in 2013 were more than 33,000 but actual figures could be higher as most rape cases go unreported and many of them are of minors or students.

#1 Delhi Gang Rape Case (2012)
It was popularly known as the Nirbhaya Rape case. A 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern, Jyoti Singhwas beaten, gang raped, and tortured in a private bus in which she was traveling with her male friend who was also beaten up. They both were then pushed out of the bus. The victim died after 13 days in the hospital. It was widely reported in the media and mass protests were held in the capital and all over the country.
The six rapists were arrested and found guilty. One hanged himself in the Tihar Prison. The other four were sentenced death and one juvenile was sentenced three years in prison. This also caused a large public outcry.

#2 Priyadarshini Mattoo Rape Case
Priyadarshini Mattoo was a 25-year-old Law student in Delhi University. She was found raped and murdered at her house in New Delhi on January 23, 1996. The accused was Santosh Kumar Singh, the son of a Police Inspector-General. He was smitten by her and made numerous proposals to her and then started stalking her. A police escort was provided for some time, but the stalking continued.
He was acquitted by a trial court in 1999 but due to the pressure of media and the wrongly presented facts, he was then convicted by Delhi High Court on October 17, 2006, and was sentenced death punishment. However, it was reduced to life imprisonment.

#3 Jalgaon Rape Case
Jalgaon rape case was a major case of human trafficking, rape, and sexual slavery that took place in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, India. It came to light in July 1994. The girls were mostly minor and from school. The girls were tricked, drugged and sometimes tortured for rape by businessmen, professionals, politicians and criminals. It is said to involve 300 to 500 women and to have been running for 5 to 12 years.
Prominent among the accused were two shiv Sena leaders and members of the Jalgaon Municipal Council, a doctor, a lawyer, an employee of a radio broadcasting station and a lodge owner The cases had become weak as the medical evidence had been gone because, by the time FIRs had been reported, a year had gone by. Still, 5 accused were given life imprisonment.

#4 Ajmer Rape Cases
Ajmer Rape Case was one of the biggest cases of India of sexual slavery and exploitation which occurred in Ajmer, Rajasthan. It was exposed in 1992. More than 100 school girls were befriended and then raped by a gang. They also took pictures in compromising positions and then used it to exploit the girls.
It was difficult to build a case as most of the victims were afraid to come forward. By the time of prosecution, only 2 remained active. The Ajmer District court convicted eight suspects and sentenced them to life imprisonment after 6 years of proceedings.

#5 Ranga-Billa Case
Ranga-Billa Case which is also popularly known as the Geeta and Sanjay Chopra kidnapping case happened in 1978 and shook the whole country. Geeta and Sanjay Chopra were siblings 16 and 14 years old. They were children of a Naval Officer and were going to All India Radio studio in Delhi. They took a lift from two men named Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa). These men then asked for a ransom and then killed Sanjay. Before Killing Gita, she was raped brutally by both men.
This case shook the whole country and there were major protests all over the nation. Both the men were sentenced to death and were hanged at Tihar Jail in 1982. Both the victims were awarded Kirti Chakra. A Sanjay Chopra Award and Geeta Chopra Award was instituted for bravery by children under the age of 16.

#6 Scarlett Keeling
Scarlett Keeling visited India with her family in the year 2008. She was staying at a resort in Goa. Her family left but she stayed behind to explore more with her Indian Friend who was 25 years old. Scarlett who was 15 was found raped and murdered by drowned in the sea.
The Indian media covered the story. She was criticized for her lifestyle that included experimenting with drugs and her mother was blamed for casual attitude. This made the situation worse for her family who were grieving at that time. The case is still on trial.

#7 Kamduni gangrape and murder case
This case happened just six months later to Nirbhaya Case. On 7 June 2013, a 20-year-old college student was abducted, gang-raped and murdered in Kamduni, near Barasat, about 20 km from Kolkata. This was widely protested by people in Kolkata. The second year BA student was walking home along the Kamduni BDO Office Road in the afternoon when she was abducted and taken inside a factory where she was gang raped by at least nine men. After raping her, the perpetrators tore apart her legs up to the navel, slit her throat and dumped her body into a nearby field.
This was a horrifying incident and people demanded justice immediately. In 2016, 6 men were found accused. Three of them were sentenced to death and six of them were given life imprisonment.

#8 Sonam Murder and Rape Case

Sonam Rape case told the story of the situation of Dalits in India. Sonam was a resident of Uttar Pradesh and on, 10 June 2011 went to see her family’s cattle only never to return. When her family enquired about her, they were horrified to see her body hanging on a tree in the Police Station compound! Horrified, her mother asked for help and action, the police initially did not registered the case but later did under the pressure of the villagers.
An investigation was set up and rape and murder were implicated. All the 11 policemen of the Uttar Pradesh were suspended and a case was launched on them. The verdict is yet to come.

#9 Suryanelli Rape Case
Suryanelli Rape Case refers to a case of kidnapping and subsequent rape of a 16-year-old schoolgirl from Suryanelli, Kerala in 1996. The girl was allegedly lured with the promise of marriage and kidnapped. She was allegedly raped by 37 of the 42 accused persons, over a period of 40 days.
The case soon caught media attention when she accused many imminent personalities of raping her like INC leader P. J. Kurien. Many women activist took an interest in this case. A division bench of Kerala High Court convicted 24 of the 31 accused in the Suryanelli rape case but Kurien was acquitted. The sentences ranged from 4-13 years and fines.

#10 NLS Rape Case
National Law School, Banglore is considered on the best educational institutes of India. A South Asian female student was sitting in a car with her male friend in 2012 when they were attacked by the eight-member gang. The assailants, suspected sandalwood smugglers, dragged her out of the car, took her deep into the forest, and raped her. They then let her go by giving Rs 10.
This shameful act was then widely criticized by the media and student held protests marches and demanded immediate action. Seven accused were arrested including one juvenile. Six were sentenced to life imprisonment and one accused is still at large.
