This is a ritual which happens in Sonapur, Maharashtra in which new born babies of two weeks babies are tossed from a height of 50 ft! Yes, it it true. When a woman gets pregnant, the whole family comes to visit the Shrine of Baba Umer Dargah to pray. After the birth of the child, they are tossed from a height of 50 ft and are caught by the villagers on the ground by sheets. .The parents believe that the practice will give their children long and healthy lives.This is practiced mostly by Muslims but some Hindu families also engage in it. National Government strongly oppose this and so do we!

JALLIKATTU in Tamil Nadu
Jallikattu is a bull’s game day event happening in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebrations. There is a temple bull on which many rituals are performed and one is bull fight. In this man has to chase the bull and snatch the prize from its horn. This game has been played for a very long time, even though it has resulted in over 200 deaths! Supreme Court banned it in 2014 but due to widespread protest it was taken back, but now in 2016 it was banned again.

The Aghori Sadhus
Aghoris are the mysterious Sadhus in India who believes Shiva is the ultimate god and worship him. The strange fact about them is that they do not consider anything to be a taboo. They drink alcohol, take drugs and even engage in sexual practices. The most strange thing about them is that they eat human flesh! An aghori lives in the cremation ground and is able to support himself there. When a person is cremated, an aghori will coat himself in the ashes of the body and meditate on the dead and even eat the remains of him!

Lath Maar Holi
This is ritual accompanied with the festival Holi. It takes place well before the actual Holi in the town of Barsana near Mathura in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Legend has it that Lord Krishna from Nandgaon visited his beloved Radha’s village on this day and playfully teased her and her friends. Taking offense at this, the women of Barsana chased him away. So, on this festival women with their sticks, chase men away on Holi!

Dhinga Gavar
It is a festival celebrated in Rajasthan. Dhinga Gavar is basically a folk deity, the humorous side of Shiva’s consort Gangaur. The festival starts on the next day of Holi. The legend is that Shiva once teased his consort Parvati by dressing up as a cobbler. In retaliation Parvati also appeared asBhil tribal women before Shiva to tease and have some fun out of it. Men are in some fancy dress and protect the statue of Dhinga Gavar. Women patrol the night with sticks in their hands.
If an unmarried man comes near the women, he is beaten up by them! It is a popular belief that if he wants to get married, then he must come near the brigade of women and get a thrash!

Mourning of Muharram
To commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali (a grandson of Muhammad), some groups of Shia Muslims take to the streets and whip themselves with specially designed chains with razors or knives attached! It is said that no pain comes to them on this day. Thousands of mourners slit open their heads with swords, big knives and razor blades streaming their blood to signify their grief over the martyrdom. While many Muslims have raised eyebrows about this practice, many leaders endorse it!
