Significant Revisions in NCERT History Textbooks for Balanced Education
Changes in NCERT History Curriculum
Recent updates to NCERT history textbooks have introduced notable changes. Sunil Ambekar, a prominent figure in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), announced that the term "The Great" has been eliminated from the titles of historical figures such as Mughal emperor Akbar and Mysore's Tipu Sultan. This move is part of an ongoing discussion aimed at presenting a more accurate and impartial perspective of Indian history.
Ambekar emphasized that these modifications aim to challenge outdated colonial narratives. He mentioned during an event that NCERT has revised textbooks for various grades, with these updates set to take effect for Classes 9, 10, and 12 in the upcoming academic year. The intention is to educate the younger generation about a comprehensive view of history, ensuring that no historical figure is entirely omitted. Instead, a balanced portrayal of their achievements and misdeeds will be provided.
Positive Adjustments in Historical Narratives
According to Ambekar, the removal of descriptors like "great" from the textbooks reflects a commitment to objectively assess the contributions and impacts of rulers on Indian society before labeling them as such.
Fostering a Balanced Understanding of History
The amendments made by NCERT align with the guidelines of the New Education Policy 2020. Ambekar stated that these changes will promote a fair representation of history. Students will learn not only about the achievements of historical figures but also about the harsh realities of their reigns. The aim is to foster a comprehensive understanding of history rather than a one-dimensional admiration.
Scope of Textbook Revisions
Reports indicate that NCERT has introduced these beneficial changes across 11 out of 15 classes. The revisions for Classes 9, 10, and 12 will be fully integrated starting next academic year. This gradual implementation is designed to facilitate a smoother transition for both students and educators.
Highlighting Ancient Indian Wisdom
Ambekar also underscored the significance of ancient Indian knowledge and skills alongside historical education. He referenced Nalanda University, which offered a variety of skill-based courses in addition to literature, suggesting that the new curriculum will prioritize ancient Indian traditions and values, fostering a sense of pride in students regarding their heritage.
