NTA Introduces New Regulations for NEET UG Exam

Upcoming Changes to NEET UG Exam: In light of the ongoing discussions regarding the NEET UG 2026 examination, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is gearing up to implement substantial modifications. The NTA has communicated to a Parliamentary Committee that new regulations concerning age limits and the number of attempts allowed for the NEET exam may soon be established. This means that candidates will only be permitted to take the medical entrance exam until they reach a specified age and within a defined number of attempts.

**Introduction of Attempt Limits for NEET**

Currently, there are no restrictions on the number of attempts for the NEET UG examination; students can attempt the exam as often as they like. However, the NTA is preparing to change this policy. The Parliamentary Committee was informed that, following recommendations from an expert panel, a limit on attempts may be enforced. As a result, students will have a restricted number of chances in the future.

**Consideration of an Upper Age Limit**

At this time, the NEET UG examination only requires candidates to be at least 17 years old, with no upper age limit in place. However, the NTA is contemplating the introduction of a maximum age limit. This would mean that students exceeding a certain age would be barred from taking the NEET exam. The exact age limit has yet to be determined.

**Changes Prompted by Paper Leak Scandal**

The NEET UG 2026 examination has been embroiled in controversy, with allegations that several questions circulated online prior to the exam, matching those on the actual test. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating this issue. In response, the Parliamentary Committee on Education summoned NTA officials to address concerns regarding the examination process.

During the session, the NTA maintained that the paper had not leaked from its system but acknowledged that some questions had circulated before the exam. The agency explained that due to these irregularities, a decision was made to conduct a re-examination to restore student trust.

**Focus on Computer-Based Testing and Multi-Session Exams**

The NTA informed the Parliamentary Committee that several important changes could be introduced to the NEET examination soon. These changes may include a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format, multi-session exams, and multi-stage assessments, as suggested by former ISRO Chairman K.

According to the NTA, over 2.2 million candidates participated in the NEET UG 2026 examination on May 3. It was later revealed that around 120 questions from a purported ‘guess paper’ were identical to those on the actual exam. Following this discovery, the exam was canceled on May 12, and the case was referred to the CBI. The re-examination is now set for June 21.

Controversy Surrounding the Term ‘Paper Leak’
During the parliamentary committee meeting, BJP members expressed concerns over the use of the term ‘paper leak,’ arguing that it should not be used until the investigation concludes. In contrast, opposition members questioned the rationale behind canceling the exam if no leak had occurred.
