Understanding CBSE's Passing Marks for 2026

Clarification on Passing Marks: Recently, there has been significant chatter on social media and in educational institutions about whether students must achieve a minimum of 33% marks in both board exams and internal assessments. This concern emerged after the CBSE released documents pertaining to the new academic framework for 2026-27. However, the CBSE has now clarified that there will be no alterations to the passing criteria for Class 10. Students are still required to obtain a total of 33% marks to pass any subject, consistent with the current regulations.

Exam Structure:
The written exams for Classes 9 and 10 will consist of 80 marks, while internal assessments will contribute 20 marks. The overall result will be determined by the cumulative scores from both sections. Importantly, the CBSE has emphasized that students must engage in both components; passing is not possible by completing only the board exam or solely the internal assessment. Participation in both is essential.

Origin of the Confusion:
The confusion arose when a teacher from a private institution in Sonipat, Haryana, posed a question during a CBSE webinar. Officials clarified that for Class 10, achieving 33% of the total combined marks from both the written exam and internal assessment is adequate for passing. Conversely, Class 12 regulations differ; students must secure 33% marks separately in both practical and theory components for those subjects.
