About International Literacy Day

UNESCO declared September 8 as International Literacy Day on November 17, 1965, and the first celebration took place in 1966. The theme for 2026 is 'Literacy for People, the Planet, and Prosperity.' Currently, India's literacy rate stands at 80.9%, a significant increase from 74% in 2011, and up from 28.30% in 1961 and 34.45% in 1971.
