Advancing AI and Computational Thinking in Education: A New Initiative

                        Commitment to Future-Ready Education
The Ministry of Education's Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSeL) has reaffirmed its dedication to incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking (CT) into the educational framework, aiming to prepare students for the future.
In collaboration with states, union territories, and educational institutions such as CBSE, NCERT, KVS, and NVS, the Department is working on creating a relevant and inclusive curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF SE) 2023.
AI and CT: Enhancing Learning
The integration of AI and CT is set to enrich the educational experience by promoting innovative learning and teaching methods. This initiative aims to foster the ethical application of AI to address complex societal issues, beginning from Grade 3.
Formation of Expert Committee
On October 29, 2025, a stakeholder consultation was convened, featuring representatives from CBSE, NCERT, KVS, NVS, and other experts. An expert committee led by Professor Karthik Raman from IIT Madras has been established to formulate the AI and CT curriculum.
Alignment with NCF-SE 2023
During the consultation, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of DoSEL, highlighted the necessity of viewing AI education as a fundamental skill that connects students with their environment. He stressed the importance of a curriculum that is inclusive and adheres to the NCF-SE 2023 guidelines, prioritizing the unique potential of every child.
Kumar also pointed out that effective teacher training and educational resources, including NISHTHA's training modules and video learning tools, will be crucial for successful curriculum implementation. A coordination committee involving NCERT and CBSE will oversee the integration and quality assurance of the curriculum.
Timelines and Key Highlights
While it is beneficial to consider international educational standards, Kumar emphasized the need for a curriculum tailored to local requirements. Joint Secretary Prachi Pandey concluded the meeting by stressing the importance of adhering to the established timelines for curriculum development and rollout.
Key Highlights:
1. Introduction of AI and CT from Grade 3 starting in the 2026-27 academic year.
2. Integration of AI and CT curriculum, including time allocation and resources, in accordance with NEP 2020 and NCF SE 2023.
3. Development of resource materials, handbooks, and digital tools by December 2025.
4. Grade-specific teacher training through NISHTHA and other institutions, with a focus on timely implementation.
