Upcoming Changes to CUET Exam Patterns for Student Relief
Significant Updates for CUET Aspirants
Students gearing up for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), which facilitates admissions to various central universities including Delhi University (DU), are set to experience notable changes. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is in the process of revising the exam formats for both CUET UG and CUET PG. This initiative aims to alleviate the challenges faced by examinees. Reports suggest that NTA specialists have crafted a new strategy based on guidance from the Ministry of Education, which may soon be formalized into official directives.
Understanding CUET
CUET is administered by the NTA for entry into over 45 central and other universities. The CUET UG is specifically for undergraduate admissions, while CUET PG caters to postgraduate seats. Admissions to these programs are determined by CUET scores, with the UG exam attracting over 1.5 million candidates. The NTA conducts the CUET UG exam over a span of 12 to 15 days, covering 37 subjects.
Current CUET UG Exam Structure
To comprehend the necessity for changes, it's essential to analyze the existing CUET UG exam structure. Students are required to take exams in 4 to 5 subjects, which can lead to significant stress. The NTA oversees the CUET UG across 37 subjects, including 23 domain subjects, 13 languages, and one General Aptitude Test (GAT). Depending on university requirements, students must take exams for multiple subjects, with some universities mandating the GAT score and others requiring two languages. This complexity adds to the students' challenges, particularly with the exam schedule, which may force students to travel to the exam center multiple times.
Current Exam Format
Each subject currently features a 60-minute exam with 50 questions. Therefore, a student taking five subjects would spend a total of five hours answering 250 questions across different days. Similarly, completing four subjects in one day would require 240 minutes.
Proposed Changes to the Exam Pattern
There has been a longstanding call for modifications to the CUET format. Experts have been discussing potential changes, and the NTA is expected to announce these soon. Here are the proposed adjustments:
1. Single-Day Exams at One Center: Previously, students had to visit different centers on various days for different subjects. The new plan aims to have all exams for each candidate conducted on a single day at one designated center.
2. Reduced Questions and Exam Duration: The NTA is considering decreasing the number of questions per subject, which would also shorten the time allocated for each exam to around 40 to 45 minutes.
3. Fewer Mandatory Subjects: Currently, students must take exams for 4 to 5 subjects. Plans are in place to ease the mandatory nature of certain subjects, potentially relaxing the requirement for the General Test (GT).
Conclusion
These proposed changes are aimed at making the CUET experience less stressful for students, allowing them to complete their exams more efficiently.
