UP Board Evaluation Process Begins



The Uttar Pradesh Board is set to kick off the evaluation of answer sheets on March 18, 2026. An estimated one crore (10 million) answer sheets will be assessed at 249 evaluation centers established across the state.


Significant Changes in Evaluation Process

Following the completion of the UP Board Class 10 and 12 examinations, numerous students are eagerly anticipating their results. In a notable shift, the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad has introduced a 'step marking' system for the first time. This initiative aims to enhance transparency in the evaluation process and alleviate student anxiety. The evaluation will now be conducted digitally, which is expected to reduce errors and expedite the release of results. This change is particularly beneficial for students who struggle with lengthy questions and complex formulas in subjects like Mathematics and Science. The new approach emphasizes recognizing students' efforts, moving away from the previous practice of deducting full marks for a single incorrect final answer.


Evaluation Timeline and Teacher Involvement

The evaluation process will commence on March 18, 2026, with plans to assess around one crore answer sheets across 249 designated centers statewide. Approximately 150,000 teachers will be engaged in this task, with the Board aiming to complete evaluations by the end of March or the first week of April.


Understanding Step Marking

Step marking is a new evaluation method where students earn marks for each correct step taken while solving a problem. For example, if a question is worth 5 marks and a student correctly completes three steps, they will receive 3 marks, even if the final answer is incorrect. This system is designed to assist students who may make minor errors in their calculations.


Digital Evaluation Process

In a move towards modernization, the UP Board will implement a high-tech evaluation process. Answer sheets will be scanned and uploaded to a server, allowing teachers to evaluate them via computer. This digital approach aims to eliminate errors in marking and ensure that all answers are accounted for. Marks awarded will be directly stored in the Board's database, streamlining the results compilation process. Teachers have been instructed to adopt a lenient evaluation approach, awarding marks for every correct attempt. Step marking will be applied to Mathematics and Science, while language subjects will focus on linguistic accuracy. Additionally, English-medium answer sheets will be evaluated exclusively by qualified English teachers.
