UP Board Exam 2027: New Examination Pattern Introduced for Classes 11 and 12

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad has announced significant changes to the examination pattern for Classes 11 and 12 for the 2026-27 academic session. The new structure includes an 80-mark written exam and a 20-mark internal assessment. Notably, 35% of the exam questions will be application-based, promoting critical thinking. Additionally, every unit will be represented in the question papers, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the syllabus. These changes aim to enhance students' evaluative and analytical skills, marking a shift towards a more modern educational approach.

Changes in UP Board Examination Structure

UP Board Exam 2027: The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) has revealed modifications to the examination format for Intermediate level students (Classes 11 and 12) for the academic year 2026-27. These adjustments are based on the recommendations from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023, and the National Assessment Centre (PARAKH). The new system will commence with Class 11 in the upcoming session. Under this revised structure, the written examination for UP Board Intermediate classes will now be worth 80 marks, with an additional 20 marks designated for internal assessments.

At present, subjects for Class 12 in the UP Board, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Home Science, consist of a 70-mark written exam alongside a 30-mark practical exam. Non-practical subjects such as Hindi, English, Sanskrit, and Economics currently have a 100-mark written exam. However, with the new changes, a 20-mark internal assessment will be introduced for non-practical subjects, while the practical exam component will be reduced from 30 marks to 20 marks. Preparations are in progress to implement these modifications starting with Class 11 in the next academic year.

Application-Based Questions to Dominate

**35% of Class 11-12 Exam Questions to be Application-Based**

Experts from the State Institute of Education have developed sample papers for subjects like History, Geography, Economics, and Civics for Classes 11 and 12. Following PARAKH's recommendations, the majority of questions—35% of the total marks—will focus on application-based assessments. Previously, UP Board question papers were evaluated based on four criteria: knowledge (20%), comprehension (30%), application (30%), and skill (20%). The new format will assess students on six criteria: knowledge (17.5%), comprehension (17.5%), application (35%), analysis (22%), evaluation (4%), and creation (4%).

Mandatory Inclusion of Questions from Every Unit

**Questions from Every Unit**

The UP Board Intermediate question papers are undergoing a redesign. It is now compulsory to include questions from every unit, with specified weightage for each. Students must prepare all units, as the question paper will not feature external choice questions. The number of descriptive questions has been minimized. For long-answer questions, internal choices will be provided, corresponding to the same unit, objective, and difficulty level. The questions included in the paper will encourage the development of students' evaluative, analytical, and creative skills.
