Union Budget 2026-27: Major Investments in Education and Biopharma Sectors
Significant Budget Allocations for Education
During the presentation of the Union Budget for 2026-27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted crucial reforms aimed at enhancing the education sector. The budget allocates over ₹1.39 lakh crore specifically for education, with funds distributed between school and higher education.
The Ministry of Education has been allocated ₹1,39,289 crore in total. Out of this, ₹83,562 crore is designated for the Department of School Education and Literacy, while ₹55,727 crore is set aside for higher education. The government's goal is to improve educational infrastructure across both rural and urban areas, ensuring better facilities for students.
New Initiatives in Education
The budget introduces several new initiatives, including the establishment of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda and support for states to create five additional universities. A notable announcement is the plan to set up a girls' hostel in every district, which aims to significantly aid female students from remote regions pursuing their education.
Investment in the Biopharma Sector
Major Boost for the Biopharma Sector
Despite the focus on education, the digital education sector expressed disappointment regarding the GST rates. EdTech companies and students had anticipated a reduction in the 18% GST, but no such relief was provided.
The government plans to invest ₹10,000 crore over the next five years to establish a robust biopharma sector, positioning India as a global manufacturing hub. Additionally, three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) will be launched, and seven existing institutions will receive upgrades to enhance pharmaceutical education.
Fostering Innovation and Employment
AI and Youth-Driven Innovation
The budget also emphasizes AI applications and innovation driven by youth. Plans include the creation of content creator labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges, which will support industries like animation, gaming, and visual effects. Furthermore, there are initiatives to upgrade Ayush pharmacies and increase the number of professionals by establishing veterinary colleges.
In a move to integrate health and education, the establishment of emergency and trauma care centers in district hospitals is planned, which will enhance their capacity by up to 50%. States will receive assistance in developing regional medical hubs.
Preparing Youth for the Future
Making Youth Industry-Ready
The Finance Minister announced the formation of a permanent high-level committee aimed at connecting education with employment and entrepreneurship. This committee will focus on improving coordination between skills, technology, and job opportunities, with the vision of making India a global leader in the service sector by 2047. Overall, the 2026 Budget has made substantial strides, recognizing the importance of education as a cornerstone for the nation's future.
