Significant Changes in SSC CGL 2026 Exam Pattern: Sectional Timing Introduced
Overview of SSC CGL 2026 Exam Changes
New Exam Format for SSC CGL 2026: The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced a pivotal alteration in the examination structure for SSC CGL 2026. This year, sectional timing will be enforced for both Tier-1 and Tier-2 exams. Candidates will no longer have the flexibility to allocate the total exam time as they wish. Instead, a fixed duration is assigned to each subject, requiring candidates to complete questions within the specified time. Notably, only 15 minutes will be available for challenging sections like Mathematics and Reasoning, which has raised concerns among numerous candidates.
Sectional Timing Details
New Rule for Time Management: For the first time, SSC CGL 2026 will not allow candidates to use the time designated for one section in another. Once the time for a section ends, the exam will automatically transition to the next part. This change means that only those candidates who can work quickly and have a solid understanding of all four subjects will excel in this new format.
Exam Structure and Timing
Tier-1 Exam Format: In the SSC CGL Preliminary (Tier-1) exam, candidates will face 25 questions from Mathematics, English, Reasoning, and General Knowledge, with each section limited to just 15 minutes. The total exam duration will be one hour, and a penalty of half a mark will be imposed for incorrect answers. The Mathematics and Reasoning sections are expected to be particularly challenging due to the tight time constraints.
Tier-2 Exam Timing
Sectional Timing for Tier-2: The new sectional timing will also apply to the SSC CGL Mains (Tier-2) exam. Candidates will have 30 minutes to answer 30 questions in Mathematics and Reasoning. For the English section, 40 minutes will be allocated for 45 questions, while 20 minutes will be given for 25 questions in General Awareness. The Computer Knowledge section will consist of 20 questions, with only 15 minutes allowed for completion.
