Proposed Changes to NEET-UG and CUET-UG Exam Structure: Twice a Year Exams

The Ministry of Education is considering significant changes to the NEET-UG and CUET-UG examination system, proposing to conduct these exams twice a year. This initiative aims to alleviate the pressure on students and reduce their dependence on private coaching. Additionally, the proposal includes reviewing question paper difficulty levels and incorporating state board syllabi. Specialized training for school teachers is also suggested to enhance academic support. These changes are currently in the draft stage and await government approval.

Proposed Changes to Major Entrance Exams

Students gearing up for NEET-UG and CUET-UG might see significant changes in the examination framework. The Ministry of Education has put forth a proposal to hold major entrance exams at least biannually. Presently, JEE Main is conducted twice a year, while NEET-UG and CUET-UG are typically offered once annually. This initiative aims to ease the burden of a single exam on students and lessen their dependence on private coaching centers.

Proposal for Biannual Exams

In June 2025, a nine-member committee was established by the Ministry of Education to explore ways to minimize students' reliance on coaching institutes. The committee's recommendations include conducting significant entrance exams like NEET and CUET at least twice a year. This would allow students two chances to take the exam, thereby alleviating the pressure associated with a single attempt and potentially reducing exam-related anxiety. However, it is important to note that this proposal is still in the draft phase.

Review of Exam Difficulty Levels

The committee has also suggested a reassessment of the methods used to formulate entrance exam question papers. Concerns have been raised by students and parents regarding the excessive difficulty of certain questions in relation to the prescribed syllabus. The proposal stresses the need to align the complexity of questions with the students' grade levels and the syllabus.

Inclusion of State Board Syllabi

Additionally, the draft proposes that entrance exam questions should not be limited to the NCERT syllabus alone; it should also encompass curricula from various states and educational boards. The goal is to ensure that students from diverse educational backgrounds have equal opportunities.

Specialized Training for Educators

The Ministry of Education has also put forward the idea of specialized training for school teachers. This initiative aims to equip teachers with the skills necessary to guide students according to the demands of competitive exams. It is anticipated that this will enhance academic support at the school level and reduce the need for private coaching. However, these changes will require final approval from the government before they can be implemented.
