New Delhi: Matthew Prince, the CEO of Cloudflare, stands out among the elite tech leaders who have made significant contributions to both education and innovation. With a passion for computer science from a young age, Matthew began his journey in Utah and later established his reputation at some of the world's top universities.
Educational Background
Born on November 13, 1974, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in Park City, Matthew developed an early interest in computer science. His mother would sneak him into computer science classes at the University of Utah. In his childhood, he attended Roland Hall-St. Mark's School in 1988.
High School Achievements
In 1996, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College, majoring in English literature and computer science. Actively participating in college activities, he was appointed editor-in-chief of The Trinity Tripod. Interestingly, he co-founded an online magazine, The Trincoll Journal, during his freshman year with Peter Adams and Paul Tesko.
He later earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Chicago Law School in 2000 and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 2009 as a George F. Baker Scholar.
Career Path
Matthew began his career early, working at Latham & Watkins while completing his degree at the University of Chicago. This American multinational law firm was established in 1934 in Los Angeles, California. After graduation, he worked for an online insurance company called GroupWorks.
Teaching Cyber Law
He also started teaching cyber law at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law and co-authored a paper on the CAN-SPAM Act after passing the UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology and Privacy Law.
One of his significant early ventures was creating anti-spam software for emails called Unspam, inspired by the establishment of the national Do Not Call Registry through the CAN-SPAM Act. This led to the founding of Cloudflare.
Founding Cloudflare
In 2008, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reached out to Unspam Technologies to discuss the importance of the data held by the company. Cloudflare was founded in 2009 in collaboration with Michelle Zatlin, a Harvard Business School graduate, and the company went public in 2019.
