The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is facing significant backlash regarding its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12 examinations. Numerous students have reported that their results were negatively impacted due to technical issues within the OSM process. In response, the central government has established a one-member committee to investigate these claims. Alarmingly, it has been disclosed that the OSM system had already encountered failures during its trial phase, yet the board proceeded with its implementation, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction among students. Prior to the exams, educators and specialists had raised concerns about various technical and evaluation-related problems.


Details of the OSM Trial

To better understand the situation, let's delve into the specifics of the CBSE OSM trial, including its timeline, location, and the glitches that were reported.


**Trial Conducted in Five Delhi Schools**


The CBSE attempted to digitize the evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets through the OSM system. A three-day trial was conducted in January 2026 across five notable schools in Delhi. This trial involved representatives from both private and government institutions, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas. Additionally, principals, examiners, Additional Head Examiners (AHEs), and subject experts received training on the OSM system prior to the evaluation process.


However, during a Governing Body meeting in June 2025, members recommended that pilot projects covering various subjects should be executed across different regional offices before the nationwide rollout of the OSM system.


Unresolved Glitches Post-Trial

Sources indicate that numerous glitches were encountered during the CBSE OSM trial, with several serious issues remaining unresolved by the conclusion of the three-day period. A second report compiled after the trial highlighted at least 36 concerns related to technical, operational, and evaluation aspects.


**Flaws Identified During the OSM Trial**


Several shortcomings were noted during the trial of the CBSE Class 12 OSM system, including:


1. Marks increased by the Additional Head Examiner (AHE) were recorded as decreases in the system.


2. The marks displayed on the screen frequently did not align with the official marking scheme.


3. For questions with multiple sections, only one section's marks were visible.


4. The OSM system awarded 0.5 marks for multiple-choice questions, contrary to the intended one mark or zero.


5. The system sometimes enforced the awarding of 0.5 marks, despite the marking scheme prohibiting it.


6. The platform frequently froze or became unresponsive when the 'Undo' button was utilized.


7. Certain designated marks were entirely absent from the evaluation interface.


8. Data was not auto-saved during evaluations, allowing examiners to enter marks for blank pages and unanswered questions.

After the CBSE announced the Class 12 results on May 13, numerous students across the nation filed complaints. Many claimed that their answer sheets were not fully evaluated, while others reported that their responses were only partially assessed. Students also expressed frustration over receiving inconsistent marks for identical answers and raised issues regarding blurred scanned answer sheets.
