CBSE Mandates Third Language Instruction from Class 6 Starting 2026-27

The CBSE has introduced a new mandate requiring all affiliated schools to teach a third language from Class 6, starting in the 2026-27 academic year. This initiative aims to enhance students' linguistic skills and align with the New Education Policy's vision of multilingual education. Schools must implement this directive promptly and choose any recognized Indian language for instruction. The curriculum will focus on speaking, reading, and writing skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their academic futures. This significant change reflects a commitment to comprehensive language education in schools.

Introduction of Third Language Requirement

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a new directive requiring all affiliated schools to teach a 'Third Language (R3)' beginning in Class 6, effective from the academic year 2026-27. Schools are expected to implement this change within a week.

Transforming Language Education

This initiative marks a significant shift in the educational approach, moving from a focus on one or two languages to a tri-lingual model. The CBSE's circular emphasizes the necessity of this change, aligning with the New Education Policy (NEP), which advocates for multilingual exposure to enhance students' linguistic abilities.

Implementation Timeline

Schools that have not yet adopted a third language are required to do so immediately, with no delays permitted. This urgency reflects the Board's commitment to ensuring that students are equipped with diverse language skills.

Language Selection Flexibility

The CBSE allows schools to choose any recognized Indian language as the third language. While textbooks may be developed later, schools can start teaching using existing resources right away. They must also report their chosen language to their Regional Offices and the OASIS portal.

Continuity of Language Learning

A crucial aspect of this directive is that the selected language must be taught continuously from Class 6 through to Classes 9 and 10. This decision is vital as it will influence students' academic paths significantly. Regional Officers will monitor compliance to ensure that schools adhere to these regulations.

Learning Objectives for the Third Language

The curriculum for the third language aims to develop comprehensive skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. An accompanying 'Annexure' details the specific competencies to be taught.
