CBSE Introduces On-Screen Marking System for Class 12 Answer Sheets
Introduction of On-Screen Marking
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to implement an On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for evaluating Class 12 answer sheets. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accuracy for students. An official letter sent to school heads clarified that the evaluation method for Class 10 answer sheets will remain unchanged. This change will impact students across India and 26 other countries, as CBSE conducts examinations for approximately 4.6 million students annually.
Details from the Official Notification
The official notification states, 'In our ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency and transparency, the board has decided to introduce On-Screen Marking (OSM) for the evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets starting from the 2026 examinations. The evaluation of Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be conducted physically as before.'
Reducing Errors and Delays with Digital Evaluation
According to the board, the new system will streamline the evaluation process and minimize manual errors. OSM will automate coordination tasks, eliminate errors in score calculations, and reduce the need for manual intervention.
Objectives of the New System
Officials have indicated that the digital approach aims to expedite the evaluation process and allow more teachers to participate. Educators will be able to assess answer sheets from their respective schools without disrupting their daily responsibilities.
CBSE emphasized that this transition will reduce costs and time associated with transporting answer sheets while promoting environmentally friendly practices.
Once OSM is implemented, there will be no need for verification of scores post-results, thereby decreasing workforce requirements.
Preparation and Support for Schools
- CBSE has instructed all affiliated schools to establish the necessary infrastructure for the new system.
- Requirements include computer labs with public static IP addresses, computers with at least 4 GB RAM running Windows 8 or newer, updated browsers, Adobe Reader, stable internet speeds of 2 Mbps or higher, and uninterrupted power supply.
- To ensure teachers and staff are prepared, CBSE will provide login access to all teachers with OSIS IDs to familiarize them with the OSM platform.
- The board will conduct tests, organize training sessions, release instructional videos, and set up a dedicated call center for technical support.
- Detailed instructions for each implementation phase will be provided to schools to ensure timely action by all stakeholders.
- CBSE anticipates that allowing teachers from all affiliated schools in India and abroad to participate in the evaluation process will make assessments more inclusive and efficient.
- This change marks a significant step in the board's ongoing modernization of examination and evaluation processes.
