Major Update for CBSE Class 12 Board Exams


CBSE Exam 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant modification to the Class 12 board examination process. Beginning in 2026, answer sheets for Class 12 will be assessed using the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, with the new method set to take effect from February 17, 2026. In contrast, Class 10 answer sheets will continue to be evaluated through traditional physical methods.

The CBSE has indicated that the shift to on-screen marking aims to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the evaluation process. The anticipated benefits include:

  • Reduction in manual tasks, leading to increased automation.

  • Teachers can evaluate from their own schools, maintaining their regular responsibilities.

Insights from Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj:
In a letter addressed to the principals of affiliated schools, CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj emphasized that these changes are designed to enhance the verification process. Schools are encouraged to set up the necessary infrastructure to facilitate teachers marking from home.


Infrastructure Requirements for Schools:
To prepare for this transition, schools must ensure the following infrastructure is in place:



  • Computer labs equipped with a public static IP address.


  • Devices running Windows OS 8 or higher.


  • A minimum of 4 GB RAM.


  • Updated web browsers.


  • Adobe Reader installed.


  • Internet speed of at least 2 Mbps.


  • An uninterrupted power supply (UPS).



Teacher Preparation:
CBSE will offer training sessions for teachers. Those with an OASIS ID (Online Affiliated School Information System) will be able to access the system. The board plans to conduct multiple practice sessions, training programs, and establish a call center for immediate assistance. Instructional videos and detailed guidelines will also be provided for each task.


Significance of the Change:
CBSE administers Class 10 and 12 examinations annually across India and in 26 other countries, with around 4.6 million students participating. The digitalization of Class 12 examinations is expected to streamline the testing process, making it quicker, more precise, and transparent. Experts view this initiative as a positive step by CBSE, aimed at reducing human error. With training provided to teachers and the ability to work from their schools, this change is anticipated to minimize cheating and inaccuracies, ultimately benefiting students and educators alike.
