Issues Arising from CBSE's On-Screen Marking System

This year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) for evaluating Class 12 answer sheets, allowing for online assessment. As of May 19, students can now request scanned copies of their answer sheets. However, numerous complaints have emerged regarding the OSM system, with many students reporting missing supplementary answer sheets. One student even noted that certain questions did not receive any marks.

Students are raising concerns about the technical issues within the CBSE Class 12 OSM system, claiming these discrepancies could adversely affect their academic futures. Below are some specific cases highlighting the problems faced by students.

Case 1

A Class 12 student reported that her scanned Mathematics answer sheet was incomplete, as her supplementary sheet was missing. Although the cover page indicated there were "2 copies" (including the supplementary sheet), she found that 16 pages were absent, leading to a loss of 22 marks.

Case 2

Another student, who achieved an overall score of 84 percent, claimed he should have received 70 marks in Chemistry but was awarded only 48 marks due to unrecorded scores.

Case 3

A student who scored over 95 marks in most subjects received only 86 marks in Physics, with the supplementary answer sheet missing. A 4-mark question was not evaluated, and the student did not receive marks according to the step-by-step marking scheme. This student had applied for an undergraduate program in Singapore, but the re-evaluation process may delay their admission.

This year marks the first implementation of the OSM system for Class 12 evaluations by CBSE. Despite claims of using OSM since 2014, the results this year have shown a significant decline, with the lowest scores recorded in the past seven years, particularly in the Science stream.
