The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notice warning students against two so-called educational institutions in Kuttalam, Tamil Nadu. The two institutions in question are the Open International University for Alternative Medicines and the National Board of Alternative Medicines. The UGC has stated that these self-proclaimed institutions are in violation of the UGC Act of 1956, offering courses that could jeopardize the careers of students who enroll. It is important to note that both institutions lack the necessary accreditation to award degrees according to UGC guidelines. They are not registered under Section 2(f) or Section 3 in the list of universities and are not permitted to confer degrees as per Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956.

In an official notice, the commission emphasized that only a university established or incorporated under a Central Act, a Provincial Act, or a State Act, or an institution deemed to be a University under Section 3, or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament can exercise the right to confer or grant degrees. The commission also clarified that the Open International University for Alternative Medicines and the National Board of Alternative Medicines are not authorized to use the term "university" in their names as they are not established under a central, provincial, or state act.

This is not the first time that the UGC has warned students about fake universities. Last year, the UGC published a list of fake universities by state and warned students not to enroll in any program offered by these institutions. The UGC had identified 21 "fake" universities that were not entitled to confer degrees as they were not recognized by the commission. Of these, four were in Uttar Pradesh, eight were in Delhi, and the others operated in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry. It is crucial for students to exercise caution when selecting educational institutions and to ensure that they are accredited by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
