The Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP): A Holistic Approach

The MMTTP is an innovative initiative that seeks to enhance the quality of teacher education in India. Here's a closer look at this program:

1. Holistic Education: Nurturing Indian Traditions

Under the overarching theme of 'Holistic Education,' MMTTP introduces eight diverse themes for teacher training, each exploring various facets of Indian cultural and intellectual traditions. These themes include:

  • 1.1. Bhagavad Gita and Sacred Texts: This theme delves into the study of the Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures, emphasizing their role in shaping the Indian education system.

  • 1.2. Guru-Shishya Parampara: Exploring the age-old Guru-Shishya tradition, this theme aims to revive the mentor-student relationship in education.

  • 1.3. Gurukula System: Focusing on the Gurukula teaching-learning system, this theme aims to reintroduce this ancient pedagogical approach.

2. Indian Knowledge System: Unveiling the Untranslatable

The MMTTP also encompasses subjects categorized under the 'Indian Knowledge System,' covering topics such as:

  • 2.1. Introduction to Non-translatables: This section explores the intricate aspects of non-translatable words and concepts in Indian languages, preserving the essence of indigenous knowledge.

Karnataka's Opposition to MMTTP

While the MMTTP is poised to revolutionize teacher education in India, it has faced opposition from the Karnataka government. Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar expressed the state's reservations about the new curriculum. According to Sudhakar, the central government did not adequately consult with the state, and Karnataka does not have a state education policy in place.

Sudhakar further emphasized the need for secular educational programs that do not favor any specific religion. He suggested that if the MMTTP were to be implemented, it should be done in the next academic year, allowing Karnataka to develop its education policy in the interim.

The Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme (MMTTP) is undoubtedly a noteworthy initiative that aims to rejuvenate teacher education in India. While it faces opposition from some quarters, its holistic approach to education, rooted in Indian traditions, has the potential to reshape the landscape of teacher training. As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how MMTTP will evolve and contribute to the future of education in India. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative program.
