There is big news for the candidates who are looking to become an Assistant Professor. Candidates who have completed their PhD degree this year will also be able to become Assistant Professor. This information was given by the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He has said that PhD is not mandatory for Assistant Professor. The requirement of PhD has been abolished for recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor in universities. Now students without doing PhD can also apply for this post.

Relief given due to corona virus
This relief has been given to the candidates by the Union Education Minister due to the coronavirus pandemic. Because, due to Kovid-19 for two years, the PhD of the students has not been completed. The education minister said, earlier PhD was made mandatory for recruitment to the post of assistant professor in Indian higher education institutions. As of now, this criterion has been removed by the Ministry of Education, so that the vacancies can be filled on time and education is not affected due to possible shortage of faculty/professors.

Let us tell you that the National Eligibility Test (NET) used to be an important criterion for the recruitment of Assistant Professors in colleges and universities. But in the year 2018, the government had said that candidates would need a PhD to be appointed to the Assistant Professor posts and NET would not be the only criteria for recruitment.

This was announced by the government under the University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for the Appointment of Teachers and Other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2018.

In such a situation, the candidates were given three years to complete their PhD. All universities and colleges have been asked to start considering it during the recruitment from 2021-22 academic session. However, due to the pandemic situation, many candidates could not complete their PhD and were appealing to the government to give relaxation in it this year. After which the decision has been taken by the government. In such a situation, NET pass candidates will be able to apply for the recruitment of Assistant Professor.
