Telangana Govt Nods For 8 New Medical Colleges With 1 College Per District

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao has given the green light for the establishment of eight new medical colleges in the state. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by the CM on July 31. Each of these colleges will be set up in a different district, making Telangana the only state in the country to have a medical college in every district, as claimed by the government. This move will significantly boost the number of MBBS seats in the state, adding 800 seats.

The State Ministry revealed that each of these new medical colleges will have an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats, with 85 percent of these seats reserved under the state quota. The admission process will be conducted through state counseling procedures, overseen by Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences.

The State Health Minister, T. Harish Rao, shared with the media that Telangana has contributed around 43 percent of the total seats in government medical colleges across India. The eight new medical colleges will be established in the districts of Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Mulugu, Warangal, Medak, Yadadri Bhongiri, Rangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri.

In addition to announcing the new medical colleges, the ministry also addressed the damages caused by heavy rainfall in the state. Over the past eight years, the total number of MBBS seats has seen a significant increase, reaching 3,790. With the addition of 800 seats from the newly-approved medical colleges, the total number of seats in government medical colleges across all 33 districts of the state will rise to 4,590.

This development, as highlighted by T. Harish Rao, the Health Minister, is expected to provide more opportunities for students to pursue medical education and enhance healthcare services in the districts, aligning with the Arogya Telangana agenda. The State government added these eight new medical colleges to its existing list on Wednesday.
