Telangana Government Reserves Entire MBBS Seats for Locals

In a recent update, medical colleges established in Telangana after 2014 will now be required to reserve 100 percent of their MBBS seats for students from the state under the competent authority quota. This new regulation means that aspiring students from Telangana will have access to a total of 1,820 MBBS seats annually. The state government issued an order on July 3 to amend the Telangana State Medical Colleges Admission Rules, aligning it with the AP Reorganisation Act and Article 371D.

Previously, 85 percent of the seats in these colleges were reserved for local students, while the remaining 15 percent were unreserved. Out of the 2,850 seats available in the 20 medical colleges existing before Telangana's establishment, 1,895 seats were allocated under the Competent Authority quota. Among these seats, 280 were not specifically reserved for any particular category, allowing students from both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to compete for them. However, this arrangement often disadvantaged Telangana students, leading to their exclusion in many cases.

To address this concern, the state government has revised the rules by restricting the unreserved quota exclusively to the 20 medical colleges operational in 2014. As a result, Telangana students will now have exclusive access to an additional 520 medical seats. It's important to note that Telangana students already benefited from the existing local reservation policy, which reserved 85 percent (1,300) of the 'B category' MBBS seats. Additionally, the All India quota of 15 percent seats in the new medical colleges remains unchanged, allowing students from across the country to secure admissions based on merit.

On July 4, Health Minister T Harish Rao expressed his pride in a tweet, stating that 43 percent of the newly added MBBS seats in government medical colleges in India are from Telangana. Out of the 2,118 increased seats for 2023-24, 900 belong to Telangana. He credited this achievement to the vision of Hon'ble CM KCR.

Furthermore, he mentioned that these numbers are expected to rise once the remaining medical colleges receive approval. As part of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao's commitment to improving healthcare services, the establishment of government medical colleges in each district of Telangana has been initiated. This endeavor aims to provide high-quality healthcare services and medical education opportunities to local students.
