Schools in Ghaziabad to Remain Closed till July 15 in View of Heavy Rainfall, Kanwar Yatra

Due to heavy rainfall and the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, schools in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, will continue to remain closed until July 15. This decision comes after Ghaziabad and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced significant rainfall on Sunday. Additionally, schools in Delhi, Gurugram, and Gautam Buddha Nagar will also remain closed on Monday, July 10, due to torrential rains that have been lashing the NCR regions for the past two days.

On Sunday, torrential rains affected various parts of northern India, resulting in multiple landslides and rain-related incidents that claimed the lives of 15 individuals. Many rivers, including the Yamuna in Delhi, were flowing at high levels. In several cities and towns throughout the region, heavy flooding occurred, with roads and residential areas submerged in knee-deep water. The record-breaking rainfall overwhelmed the civic infrastructure. As a result, the authorities are taking precautionary measures for the Kanwar Yatra in Ghaziabad. The Ghaziabad Police and administration have made elaborate arrangements for the yatra, a religious pilgrimage undertaken by devotees of Lord Shiva during the holy month of 'Shrawan.' The police have heightened vigilance in the city, particularly regarding the movement of devotees returning from Haridwar after collecting holy Gangajal to offer at Lord Shiva temples in their respective areas. The Ghaziabad police will deploy a total of 25 drones to closely monitor the Kanwariyas' activities, assigning two to three drones to each police station as required. Additionally, more than 1,000 CCTV cameras, including 80 watchtowers along the seven roads connecting Haridwar via Ghaziabad district, have been installed.

Regarding the weather in Delhi-NCR, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi received 153 mm of rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, the highest single-day rainfall in July since 1982. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded this rainfall, surpassing the 24-hour rainfall of 169.9 mm on July 25, 1982.

In Gurugram, all private and government schools will remain closed on Monday, July 10, due to heavy rainfall, which caused extensive waterlogging and disrupted traffic in various parts of the city. The administration has advised corporate houses and offices to implement work-from-home arrangements. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav has urged residents to stay indoors and only venture out for essential purposes. Corporate offices have been instructed to advise their staff to work from home on Monday as well.
