NMC Invites Applications for Establishing New Medical Colleges and Increasing MBBS Seats
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to reopen the application window for establishing new medical colleges and increasing MBBS seats, reversing the previous rule that limited the number of medical seats per state.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to reopen the application window for establishing new medical colleges and increasing MBBS seats, reversing the previous rule that limited the number of medical seats per state. This reversal allows stakeholders to submit applications for setting up new medical colleges and boosting MBBS seats through the official website, nmc.org.in, until November 26, 2023.
The NMC's move comes in response to the previous restriction that prevented colleges and institutions from applying for new medical colleges or expanding MBBS seats due to a requirement of maintaining a ratio of 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population.
Now, colleges and institutions previously ineligible due to this population-seat ratio can utilize the reopened window, provided they meet additional conditions set by the commission to qualify for application submission.
The Undergraduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission revisited the stipulations regarding the ratio of 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population in states, prompting this development.
With this decision, the NMC has reopened its portal to enable the establishment of new medical colleges and the expansion of MBBS seats in existing institutions. This reinstates opportunities for colleges and institutions previously affected by the population-seat ratio, allowing them to apply for upcoming initiatives in medical education and infrastructure expansion in the forthcoming academic years.
