NEET UG 2024 Update: NTA Modifies Tie-Breaking Rule, Eliminates Computerised Draw Policy

Changes in Tie-Breaking Procedure:
Previously, a computerised draw of lots was used to break ties in scores among candidates. However, the NTA has decided to revert to the original rule of allocating ranks based on the number of correct and incorrect answers provided by the applicants.

Implications and Expectations:
With over 2.5 million candidates registered for the NEET UG 2024 exam, including approximately 1.3 million female applicants, there are high expectations for the exam. Understanding and navigating the modified tie-breaking system is crucial for candidates aiming to secure admission to top medical and dental universities across the country.

Examination Details:
The NEET UG 2024 exam is scheduled for May 5 and will be conducted in pen and paper format across 544 exam cities in India and 14 cities abroad.

Tie-Breaking Procedure:
The tie-breaking procedure will prioritize candidates based on their marks or percentile scores in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, in that order. Candidates will then be ranked based on the proportion of correct and incorrect answers across all subjects, with particular emphasis on the aforementioned subjects.

Rationale Behind the Modification:
This change follows the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) statement last year, which introduced a new tie-breaking provision in the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 (GMER-23). By removing the computerised draw procedure, the NTA aims to streamline the ranking process while ensuring fairness and transparency in determining candidate placements.

Application Deadline:
Candidates yet to apply must submit their application forms by today, March 16, at exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.
