NEET-UG 2024: NTA Provides Explanation on Answer Key Revision, Grace Marks, and Toppers

In response to concerns raised by students and parents regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2024, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has emphasized the transparency maintained throughout the examination process. The recent announcement of a high number of toppers in the NEET-UG 2024 results prompted questions, particularly regarding the allocation of All India Rank (AIR) One to 67 candidates, with six from a single center in Haryana.
NEET-UG 2024: NTA Provides Explanation on Answer Key Revision, Grace Marks, and Toppers

Compensation of Marks:

The NTA clarified that the revision of an incorrect answer key and the allocation of grace marks to students who experienced disruptions at certain exam centers contributed to the increased number of toppers. Approximately 1563 candidates were compensated for lost time during the exam, with revised marks ranging from -20 to 720. These compensatory marks were allocated based on the candidates' answering efficiency and the time lost, as per the mechanism established by the apex court in 2018.

Grievance Redressal Committee:

To address concerns raised by NEET (UG) 2024 candidates, a Grievance Redressal Committee comprising experts from the examination field and academia was formed. The committee thoroughly reviewed representations and factual reports from exam centers, ensuring a fair resolution to grievances.

Unprecedented Number of Toppers:

NTA attributed the unprecedented number of toppers to an increase in the number of candidates appearing for the exam. With 23,33,297 candidates in 2024 compared to 20,38,596 in 2023, a larger candidate pool naturally led to an increase in high scorers. Additionally, challenges to the provisional answer key, particularly in Physics, resulted in revised scores for some candidates.

Cutoff Scores and Performance Standards:

The determination of cutoff scores in NEET-UG exams is based on the overall performance of candidates each year. The increase in cutoff scores reflects the competitive nature of the examination and the higher performance standards achieved by candidates in 2024. It's important to note that cutoffs and average marks of qualified candidates vary annually.
