Mohammed Hussain, who lives in the slums of Mumbai, will become a big officer, succeeds in the UPSC exam
On Tuesday, a sense of immense joy and enthusiasm permeated the residence of Ramzan Sayed, a labor supervisor in Mumbai's Wadi Bandar area, as his family celebrated the remarkable achievement of his son. The youngest son of Sayed, Mohammed Husain, successfully cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2022, creating a moment of pride. Out of the 933 candidates selected by the UPSC, Mohammed Husain's accomplishment truly stood out as exceptional, considering the social and economic challenges he had overcome in his life. Despite these hurdles, the determined 27-year-old emerged triumphant on his fifth attempt, securing an impressive All-India Rank (AIR) of 570.
Although Ramzan himself did not receive a formal education, he made sure to provide his son with opportunities for education at reputable institutions within the city. Mohammed Husain attended St. Joseph's School in Dongri for his schooling and obtained his bachelor's degree from Elphinstone College in 2018. To prepare for the civil services examination, he enrolled in specialized coaching programs. He availed himself of the Civil Services Residential Coaching Institute at the Hajj Committee of India, a dedicated coaching initiative for Muslim aspirants located at Hajj House in Mumbai. Additionally, he sought guidance from academies in Pune and at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.
In an interview, Mohammed Husain revealed that his interest in pursuing a career in civil services took root at an early age, influenced by his visits to government offices with his father. He expressed gratitude for his father's constant encouragement in pushing him towards creating positive transformations. Husain also acknowledged the unwavering support he received from his family throughout his journey, to the extent that they consciously refrained from burdening him with household issues. Notably, his father even accompanied him during the examination appearances.
Residing in the close-knit community of Wadi Bandar area slums, Husain lives with his extended family, including his maternal grandmother, parents, elder brothers, their respective spouses, and children. As he eagerly awaits his mark sheet, Mohammed Husain aspires to secure a position in either the Indian Police Services (IPS) or the Indian Revenue Services (IRS). His determination and achievements serve as an inspiration to those who face similar challenges, showcasing the power of perseverance and the impact of familial support.
