Maharashtra to Get New Govt Medical Colleges in Nine Districts

In a significant development aimed at bolstering the healthcare infrastructure and addressing the shortage of doctors in Maharashtra, the state government has given the green light to establish nine new government medical colleges. This ambitious project has been allocated a substantial budget of Rs 4,366 crore. Presently, out of the 36 districts in Maharashtra, 23 already have government medical colleges. With the addition of these nine new medical colleges, the total count will rise to 32.
The strategic locations for these state-run medical colleges have been identified in various districts, including Gadchiroli, Washim, Wardha, Bhandara, Buldhana, Palghar, Amravati, Jalna, and Thane. The government resolution (GR) detailing the establishment of these colleges in the aforementioned districts has been recently issued by the Maharashtra government. Each of these medical colleges will be well-equipped with 430 beds to ensure seamless operations and enhance medical facilities for patients from these regions.
To support the efficient functioning of these medical colleges, the Maharashtra government has also approved 448 vacancies for each college, amounting to a total of 4,032 posts across all nine institutions. This move is expected to increase the number of seats for medical education by 900, thereby contributing to the production of skilled and specialized doctors. The ultimate goal is to address the dearth of doctors in the state and ensure timely access to high-quality healthcare services.
In light of this momentous decision, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has instructed government colleges to temporarily suspend the transfer of faculty members. Additionally, college deans have been directed to halt the 'on-deputation' appointments and bring back all staff members to their parent colleges.
This initiative comes after the state government's announcement to construct 12 medical colleges in the previous year's budget. While proposals for medical colleges in Palghar and Thane districts did not progress earlier, this time, the government resolution has firmly established the locations for these crucial institutions.
Overall, the approval of these nine new government medical colleges in Maharashtra marks a major milestone in strengthening the state's healthcare infrastructure and addressing the shortage of medical professionals, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for the residents.
