Lucknow University (LU) is set to undergo a significant transformation into a research and multi-disciplinary education institution following the allocation of a Rs 100 crore grant under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA). This substantial funding will bolster LU's research infrastructure and enhance its educational offerings across various disciplines.

Strengthening Research Ecosystem: LU's Vice-Chancellor, Alok Kumar Rai, outlined plans to allocate 50 per cent of the funds towards strengthening the university's research ecosystem. Key initiatives include:

  • Establishment of a centralised research facility divided into life sciences, physical sciences, and technical research sections.
  • Development of a cluster-computing facility to support information technology-related work.
  • Integration of e-software for bioinformatics, statistics, and economics in the university library.
  • Implementation of a 100 per cent Wi-Fi campus to facilitate research activities.

Enhancing Multi-disciplinary Education: The remaining 50 per cent of the grant will be utilized to enhance LU's infrastructure and promote multi-disciplinary education. Key initiatives include:

  • Revamping undergraduate and postgraduate classrooms, particularly in the historic Arts Quadrangle/Canning College.
  • Renovation of the historical Lal Baradari and teacher's quarters.
  • Construction of a five-storey lecture theatre building in the Atal block, providing ample space for academic events and conferences.
  • Expansion of sports infrastructure with the addition of new tracks and courts for athletes and players.

Lecture Theatre Building: The proposed five-storey lecture theatre building will feature:

  • 25 conference rooms with a seating capacity of 100 each.
  • Facilities to accommodate big national-level examinations, conferences, and academic events.

LU's Recognition and Grant Allocation: Lucknow University's exemplary performance led to its selection for the Rs 100 crore grant under the PM-USHA scheme. Scoring the highest among 25 universities with a score of 585 out of 650, LU demonstrated its commitment to excellence in education and research. The allocation of Rs 100 crore, along with the significant grant received by other universities in Uttar Pradesh, reflects the government's commitment to fostering academic growth and development in the state.
