Lakshadweep Administration Introduces New Uniform for School Children, MP Mohammed Faizal Alleges Ban on Hijab
The Lakshadweep administration has unveiled a fresh design for school uniforms, encompassing belts, ties, shoes, socks, and other components, to be worn by students attending schools within the territory. However, the new guidelines issued do not address the matter of hijabs or scarves for female students in the predominantly Muslim Union Territory.
This omission has stirred controversy, with Mohammed Faizal, the Lok Sabha representative for the islands, asserting that a complete prohibition on scarves or hijabs for girls enrolled in educational institutions falls within the purview of the Education department. Faizal asserted, "The absence of any reference to scarves or hijabs raises concerns about the infringement upon an individual's constitutional rights.
We are prepared to address this both through political and legal means."
