According to a report, government schools in Assam have shown improvement in their evaluations during a state-wide exercise compared to the previous year. The number of schools placed in the highest A+ grade category has increased, while those in the lowest category have decreased. The number of students placed in the top performing categories has also increased. The results of ‘Gunotsav 2023’, covering over 44,000 schools and nearly 4.1 million students, were released by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The exercise covered children from Classes 1 to 9 of various types of schools.

This year, 28.64% of schools received the A+ grade, compared to 11.56% in 2022. Additionally, 46.19% of schools received the A grade in 2023, up from 40.69% in the previous year. In contrast, the percentage of schools in categories B, C, and D has decreased this year. Schools were evaluated based on their percentage scores in different categories.

The percentage of students placed in the A+ and A categories has increased to 38.16% and 32.51% in 2023, respectively, compared to 23.79% and 25.64% in 2022. However, there has been a decrease in the percentage of students in categories B, C, and D. Among the districts, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Golaghat were the best-performing, while West Karbi Anlong, Chirang, and Karbi Anglong were at the bottom of the table.

This year’s ‘Gunotsav’ was carried out in three phases from January 18 to February 18, focusing on four core areas - scholastic, co-scholastic, infrastructure, and community participation. The government plans to incorporate the evaluation process into the academic calendar. ‘Gunotsav’ was first organized in 2017, and this was the fourth edition of the exercise. The government has claimed that the initiative has had a great impact on the school education scenario in the state.
