Introduction to Employment Challenges

In Bihar, securing employment after completing education has become a significant challenge for the youth. While many are preparing for government jobs, the lack of technical education and practical skills may hinder job opportunities. Statistics related to unemployment and the shortage of computer facilities in schools raise concerns about the education system and job readiness.

Unemployment Rates Among Youth

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2025, the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 29 in Bihar stands at 12.1%. This rate is reported to be 9.8% in rural areas and 31.3% in urban regions.

These figures highlight the disparity in employment conditions between rural and urban areas. However, to accurately assess the unemployment rate, it is essential to consider the age group, education level, and survey methodology used.

Lack of Computer Facilities in Schools

In today's digital age, computer literacy is crucial for education, online applications, and securing jobs across various sectors. According to UDISE+ 2025-26 data, out of 95,285 schools in Bihar, only 40,960 are reported to have computer facilities.

This indicates that approximately 43% of schools have computers, while around 57% lack this essential facility. Even with computers available, students must also receive adequate practical training and internet access.

Intense Competition for Government Jobs

In Bihar, government jobs are often associated with stability and financial security, leading many youths to participate in competitive exams conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC).

According to the details provided, approximately 4.8 lakh candidates appeared for 802 positions in the 67th BPSC Combined Competitive Examination. In the 70th exam, around 3.3 lakh candidates competed for 2,035 positions, while about 3.2 lakh candidates participated for 1,298 positions in the 71st exam.

Importance of Skill Training and Apprenticeships

Skill training and apprenticeships can play a vital role in preparing youth for employment. According to the data, the number of youths enrolled under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme in Bihar increased from 5,502 in 2024-25 to 9,013 in 2025-26.

However, participating in training does not guarantee permanent employment. It is crucial that training programs align with industry needs and provide practical experience along with job opportunities.

Strategies for Enhancing Employment Opportunities

To improve the employment situation in Bihar, it is essential to expand digital facilities in schools, enhance technical training, promote industry-related apprenticeships, and increase job opportunities in the private sector. Teaching youth skills beyond just degrees, such as computer literacy, data management, digital marketing, and other employable skills, can also be beneficial.
