Withdrawal of CBSE Affiliation

Amid ethnic violence in Manipur, the CBSE had initially granted affiliation to these schools upon their request, predominantly located in the state's hill districts. However, the withdrawal of affiliation came as a consequence of the no-objection certificates (NOCs) submitted by these schools. These certificates, required for affiliation, were found to lack endorsement from authorized state government officials.

Government's Response & Future Measures

Anjali Chongtham, Manipur's Joint Secretary of Education (School), revealed that the state government had requested the cancellation of these affiliations in a letter dated December 15. Additionally, Chongtham clarified that actions will be taken against those responsible for flouting regulations. Any future non-compliance by schools would result in similar consequences, apart from the withdrawal of affiliation.

Political Context & Impact

This decision comes amidst heightened demands by tribal organizations and legislators for a separate administrative setup in the hill districts, potentially moving away from the influence of the Imphal Valley. Political observers suggest that altering the education board from state to central in the hill districts could formalize new arrangements, distancing from Imphal Valley's sway.

Government's Previous Affiliation Grant

Manipur's Education Minister, Thounaojam Basantakumar Singh, highlighted that the state government had last provided NOC for CBSE affiliation in May 2020.

Additional Developments and Measures

In another development, the Churachandpur administration imposed prohibitory orders in the tribal-dominated district until February 18, 2024. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended following reported clashes among communities, with increased security measures deployed to prevent further unrest.

This recent action by the CBSE reflects the complex interplay of education, politics, and social dynamics in Manipur's current landscape.
