In a significant development, the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Odisha has made the decision to reinstate the annual examination format for Class 10 and 9 students attending government-run high secondary schools throughout the state. Over the past two years, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the board had implemented two summative assessments for these classes. Ramasish Hazra, the President of BSE, stated, "Instead of the two summative assessments, we have opted to return to the previous system of conducting a yearly exam starting from this academic session. Additionally, a half-yearly examination will be introduced for Class 10." While the board will provide question papers for both exams, only the district education officers will receive question papers for Class 9 students, as the board will not administer the examination for them. BSE also emphasized that adopting a single annual examination will alleviate the burden on students. One student expressed, "The state government's decision to reintroduce the old exam pattern will reduce the workload and prove beneficial for us."
