Jharkhand Parents Demand School Closures Amid Severe Cold Wave
Severe Cold Wave Hits Jharkhand
Currently, Jharkhand is experiencing an intense cold wave, significantly impacting daily life. The frigid temperatures during the morning and evening hours are particularly challenging for schoolchildren, who must brave the cold and fog to attend classes. In response, parents have begun to vocally request school closures.
Concerns Raised by Parents' Association
The Jharkhand Parents Association has expressed serious concerns regarding the health of children and has urged the district administration to take immediate action. They argue that attending school in such weather poses a risk to children's well-being, especially for younger students who are more vulnerable to the cold.
Request for School Holidays
Ajay Rai, the president of the Jharkhand Parents Association, has emailed the Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi, requesting a temporary closure of all schools. He emphasized that the worsening cold conditions necessitate prioritizing children's safety.
Record Low Temperatures in Several Districts
According to the association, Ranchi has recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius. Other districts like Lohardaga have seen temperatures drop to 3.0 degrees, Gumla to 5.2 degrees, and Garhwa to 4.7 degrees. Such low temperatures make it increasingly difficult for children to attend school in the mornings.
Weather Department Issues Warning
The weather department has issued a clear warning that relief from the cold is unlikely in the coming days, with dense fog and cold waves expected to persist. Under these conditions, opening schools in the morning could adversely affect children's health.
Children at Risk of Illness
Children are forced to travel to school by bus in severe cold as early as 7 AM. Even during their return in the afternoon, the chill remains. Many young students are seen shivering on their way to school, increasing the risk of illnesses such as colds, coughs, and fevers.
Call for Urgent Action from Authorities
Parents and community organizations are urging the education department to recognize the seriousness of the situation and make a prompt decision. They believe that either closing schools or adjusting school hours is essential to ensure the safety and health of the children.
