An Unusual Scoring Incident in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A student from Odisha's Class XII has reportedly been awarded an astonishing 102 marks in the English exam, as revealed by the recent results from the Council of Higher Secondary Education. This unusual situation was brought to light on Friday.

The discrepancy was found in the results of Biswajeet Oram, a science student at Ravenshaw Higher Secondary School. His score was recorded as 82 in theory and 20 in internal assessments, leading to a total of 102 marks, according to sources.

Prashant Kumar Parida, the Examination Controller of CHSE, explained that this anomaly was due to a 'computer glitch' and assured that the necessary corrections would be implemented within a week. He noted that this was the only instance of such an error reported during the examination process.

The CHSE had announced the Class XII examination results on May 20. During the announcement, Nityananda Gond, the state’s School and Mass Education Minister, stated that 4.01 lakh students had registered for the Annual Higher Secondary Examination-2026 (Class XII).

Out of these, 3.98 lakh students took the exam, with 3.41 lakh passing, resulting in an overall pass rate of 85.85%, which is an improvement over last year's 82.45%. The pass rates for various streams were 84.50% for arts, 88.80% for science, 88.07% for commerce, and 77.62% for vocational courses.
