Clarification on Mathematics Syllabus Adjustments

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has addressed concerns regarding modifications to the Class 9 mathematics syllabus and the draft textbook. They confirmed that no significant mathematics topics have been eliminated. Instead, certain subjects have been reorganized into different chapters to enhance students' understanding and application.

NCERT emphasized that the syllabus currently available is provisional and was released to gather feedback from educators, students, authors, and other stakeholders. The finalized syllabus is anticipated to be published by NCERT and CBSE in October after considering the feedback received.

Insights on 'Lines and Angles'

Concerns were raised about the lack of a specific chapter on 'Lines and Angles' in the Class 9 mathematics draft. NCERT clarified that this does not indicate the exclusion of related concepts. Essential ideas and applications regarding 'Lines and Angles' are incorporated in Class 9 Part 2 through chapters like 'Propositions and Their Converses' and 'Quadrilaterals'. Furthermore, a chapter on 'Lines and Angles' is already present in the Class 6 mathematics textbook, Ganita Prakash.

Details on 'Euclidean Geometry'

Questions about the absence of 'Euclidean Geometry' in the draft syllabus were also addressed. NCERT confirmed that concepts related to this area—such as polygons, circles, parallel lines, and intersecting lines—are included in various chapters of the Class 9 textbook. These topics will be covered in Chapters 5, 6, 9, 12, and 13. After discussions with educators and experts, it was decided to present these concepts across multiple chapters instead of dedicating a separate chapter to traditional theorems and proofs. NCERT believes this approach will facilitate better understanding and application of geometric concepts in diverse contexts, rather than rote memorization.

Inclusion of Algorithms in the Curriculum

The addition of algorithms to the Class 9 mathematics syllabus has sparked discussions. NCERT attributed this to the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence and the importance of computational thinking. The Council stated that it is crucial for students to grasp mathematical concepts such as algorithms, data structures, and running-time efficiency, as emphasized by the NEP 2020. While a separate module on AI is being developed, NCERT considers it vital to teach the foundational mathematical concepts of AI within the mathematics classroom, hence the inclusion of a chapter on algorithms.

Curriculum Evaluation Beyond Chapter Count

NCERT also pointed out that under the new educational framework, a subject should not be assessed solely based on the number of chapters in its textbook. In line with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, the curriculum has been structured around curricular goals and learning outcomes. These goals define the broader objectives of the subject, while competence refers to what students can achieve, and learning outcomes specify the expected results during the study and assessment process.
