NCERT Launches Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling for Educators
Introduction to the New Diploma Course
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced an important initiative: a 'Diploma Course in Guidance and Counselling' (DCGC) aimed at school teachers and counselling professionals. This program is designed to equip educators with the skills to tackle the academic, socio-emotional, and ethical challenges that students encounter.
Addressing Student Stress
This initiative comes in response to a report indicating that 85% of students in grades 6 to 12 are under significant stress. The course will be available starting next year at six NCERT locations: Delhi, Ajmer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Mysuru, and Shillong, with each site offering 50 seats. As NCERT evolves into a university, these centres will be upgraded to colleges, and the number of available seats will be expanded in future phases.
Curriculum Focus Areas
**Key Areas of Focus**
- Academic Issues: Addressing learning difficulties and providing guidance for academic advancement.
- Socio-Emotional Issues: Understanding emotional challenges, behavior, and social interactions among students.
- Ethical Issues: Helping students make informed decisions, understand their responsibilities, and foster positive behaviors.
Course Structure and Phases
**Course Breakdown**
The diploma program will commence next year and is divided into three distinct phases: a six-month distance learning segment (January–June 2027), a three-month in-person session (July–September), and a three-month internship in the student's local area (October–December). Officials note that the challenges students face today extend beyond academics; they often deal with career uncertainties, peer comparisons, self-confidence issues, and emotional struggles. This course aims to prepare teachers to effectively listen to and support students in overcoming these hurdles.
