What’s Behind the Heated Exchange Between Education Minister Pradhan and Rahul Gandhi Over CBSE Exams?
Public Dispute Over CBSE Exam Issues
New Delhi: A fierce exchange has erupted between Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the recent controversies surrounding the CBSE examinations. Pradhan has accused Gandhi of politicizing the matter, while Gandhi has countered that such attacks will not absolve the minister of his responsibilities.
The conflict intensified after Gandhi raised concerns about alleged irregularities in the CBSE examination process, calling for an independent judicial investigation and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to uncover the truth behind what he termed an 'entire scam'.
Gandhi also pointed out that a company with a questionable history in Telangana was awarded the contract for the digital evaluation of answer sheets by CBSE.
In response, Pradhan claimed that Gandhi's frustrations stem from his party's repeated electoral losses and accused him of resisting reforms and technological advancements. He stated, 'Rahul Gandhi seems to be in a different state of mind, frustrated by continuous electoral defeats. He has opposed various initiatives like SIR, EVMs, and Digital India, showing a lack of support for India's scientific progress.'
The minister assured that the actions taken by CBSE are in line with the Government of India's procurement policies and promised that any discovered irregularities would be addressed.
'I take responsibility on behalf of the government for any inconvenience caused and urge that this is not the time for political games. Politics can wait,' he emphasized.
Gandhi retorted, stating, 'You can attack me all you want, but it won’t absolve you of your crimes, nor will it stop me from seeking answers for 18.5 lakh children.'
He posed several questions on social media, questioning why the CBSE contract was awarded to COEMPT, a company previously embroiled in controversy under its former name, Globarena. He demanded to know the rationale behind this decision and the connections between COEMPT's management and the Modi government.
'Either you conducted a background check and proceeded regardless, or you failed to conduct one at all. In either case, you are complicit,' he stated.
Gandhi further asserted that if Prime Minister Modi genuinely cared about the situation, he would have dismissed Pradhan long ago for jeopardizing the futures of numerous students.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Pradhan's arrogance and political theatrics amidst the chaos affecting countless students, suggesting that Pradhan's focus on attacking the Leader of Opposition was misplaced.
Ramesh claimed that Pradhan's behavior reflects the Modi government's brand of politics, which he described as 'shameless and uninterested in governance.'
Earlier, Pradhan had acknowledged the mental stress faced by students and announced that a re-evaluation process would commence due to issues identified in the CBSE Class 12 examination evaluation.
He noted that approximately 17 lakh students participated in the exam, with their answer sheets securely preserved. 'In total, there are 98 lakh answer-sheet copies, each containing around 40 pages, leading to nearly 40 crore scanned pages evaluated for the first time by CBSE through the OSM process,' he explained.
Describing the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system as 'progressive and student-centric,' Pradhan highlighted its adoption by various institutions for enhanced transparency in evaluation.
'This process allows students to access information about their marks transparently, enabling them to view their answer sheets directly. It addresses students' concerns regarding their marks and any potential oversights during evaluation,' he added.
Pradhan acknowledged that some discrepancies had been noted and assured that they would be resolved, emphasizing the commitment to address all student concerns.
The CBSE has stated that its OSM system is supported by a 'secure and robust IT platform' that has undergone security audits and is backed by a strong digital infrastructure.
Earlier, Gandhi remarked that CBSE students and their parents are suffering due to the situation, while Prime Minister Modi remains silent.
