Uttar Pradesh to Mandate Teacher Eligibility Test for LT Grade Teacher Recruitment
Introduction to Upcoming Changes
Preparations are in progress to enforce the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) as a compulsory requirement for the forthcoming recruitment of LT Grade teachers in Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, there will be clarifications regarding the educational qualifications necessary for teachers.
Proposed Changes for LT Grade Assistant Teachers
A significant shift is being planned for candidates aspiring to become LT Grade Assistant Teachers in government secondary schools across Uttar Pradesh. The Secondary Education Department is working on making the TET a mandatory requirement for the next recruitment cycle. Alongside this, there will be a clarification of the educational qualifications for teachers. A proposal has been submitted to amend the 'Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Education Service Rules, 2024', aiming to align the qualifications for LT Grade teachers with the standards established by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).
Currently, while the rules specify a B.Ed. qualification, there is ambiguity regarding the minimum marks required at both graduation and post-graduation levels. The new proposal seeks to eliminate this uncertainty and emphasizes the necessity of TET for recruitment.
Details of the Proposal
The Secondary Education Department has put forth amendments for the upcoming LT Grade recruitment. A letter requesting a review of the regulations was sent by the Director of Secondary Education, Pratap Singh Baghel, on September 14, 2026. This followed directives issued during a meeting led by the Additional Chief Secretary on September 7. The department subsequently drafted a proposal to revise the educational qualifications for Assistant Teachers in government secondary schools, focusing on clarifying recruitment rules and aligning them with NCTE standards. However, these changes are still in the proposal phase, and the final decision regarding the mandatory nature of TET and the new educational criteria will require government approval.
New Academic Requirements
50% Marks in UG or 45% in PG Required
The new proposal mandates compliance with NCTE standards set on November 12, 2024, concerning the academic qualifications of teachers. According to these standards, teachers instructing classes 6 through 10 must have at least 50% marks in their undergraduate degree or a minimum of 45% in their postgraduate degree. Furthermore, obtaining a B.Ed. degree from a recognized institution is essential. In contrast, the existing regulations mention the B.Ed. requirement but lack clarity on the minimum marks needed in graduation and post-graduation.
Court Intervention and Acceleration of Process
Process Accelerated Following Allahabad High Court Intervention
Petitions regarding the academic qualifications and the mandatory nature of the TET for LT Grade teacher recruitment were filed in the Allahabad High Court. The court instructed that the rules and recruitment advertisements for teachers of classes 9 and 10 be clarified. It also highlighted the necessity to amend the regulations to include TET as a mandatory qualification.
