Significant Trends in UPSC Civil Services Exam Results

New Delhi: The results of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2025 have revealed an intriguing trend. Among the top 130 candidates in this year's merit list, 39 have previously appeared in the final lists over the last two years. These candidates were already serving in various administrative roles, but their ultimate goal was to secure an IAS position. This growing trend of 'rank improvement' has sparked extensive discussions on social media regarding the implications of seat losses and new selection process regulations.

This year's results have particularly highlighted the 39 candidates who achieved ranks below 130. This indicates that a significant portion of the newly selected IAS officers were already part of the system. Akanksha Dhul, who secured the third rank nationally, exemplifies this trend. She has been striving to improve her rank for the past two years and has finally succeeded.

Akanksha Dhul's achievement reflects her unwavering dedication. In the 2023 results, she was ranked 342, and in 2024, she improved to 295. By addressing her weaknesses, she has now made it to the top three in 2025. Other candidates like Ishaan Aastha Jain, Jeenshree Jaswant Chandra, and Vineet Lohidakshan have also demonstrated that persistent effort can lead to the realization of the IAS dream.

The Challenge of Rank Improvement

Often, candidates secure positions in services like IPS (Indian Police Service) or IRS (Indian Revenue Service) during their first attempt. However, their commitment to administrative service drives them to retake the exam. This is referred to as a 'rank improvement attempt.' This year, around 35 candidates have names listed in the 2023 or 2024 results as well. These individuals have not only improved their ranks but have also positioned themselves as stronger contenders for IAS service.

Discussion on New Regulations

In response to the ongoing trend of repeated attempts, UPSC has begun to adopt a stricter stance. According to the new regulations, if a candidate successfully secures an IAS position, they will not be allowed to retake the exam. Discussions on social media suggest that this will mitigate the issue of a single individual repeatedly occupying seats. The aim of these new rules is to ensure that more new and talented youth have the opportunity to enter administrative services.
