The Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 was unveiled on February 1, 2026, by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marking her ninth presentation in Parliament. The education sector, a focal point of the budget, has been allocated several new initiatives aimed at enhancing its framework.
Investments in Education
Funding and New Initiatives:
India aims to establish itself as a global hub for bio-pharma manufacturing through the Bio Pharma Shakti initiative, which will receive ₹10,000 crore over the next five years. Additionally, three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) will be created, and seven existing ones will undergo upgrades. The budget emphasizes the integration of AI applications and a youth-centric approach.
Upgrades will also be made to Ayush pharmacies, and new veterinary and para-veterinary colleges will be set up to train an additional 20,000 veterinary professionals.
Infrastructure Development
The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) will prioritize infrastructure development in Tier 2 and 3 cities. Furthermore, the establishment of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda (AIIAs) has been announced, along with plans for a girls' hostel in every district.
District hospitals will see a 50% increase in capacity through the creation of emergency and trauma care centers.
Support for Higher Education
The budget includes provisions for the establishment of five private universities and assistance for states to create five regional medical hubs. Additionally, 10,000 tourist guides will be trained for 20,000 iconic sites nationwide, and content creator labs will be set up in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges to bolster the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector.
Professional support will be extended to institutions like ICAI, ICSI, and ICMAI.
