Changes to the Apprenticeship Act
Modifications Overview:
The Ministry of Skill Development and Industry has implemented various changes to the Apprenticeship Act, specifically updating the Apprenticeship Rules of 1992. These adjustments were discussed during the recent 38th Apprentice Council meeting, led by Minister Jayant Chaudhary.
Key changes include promoting degree apprenticeships, offering distance or virtual training options, expanding regional boards, and ensuring comprehensive industry coverage. The ministry has introduced a 'Degree Apprenticeship' initiative that encompasses all courses involving apprenticeships.
New Trainee Regulations
Company Trainee Quotas:
According to the revised Apprenticeship Rules, companies can now employ trainees ranging from 2.5% to 15% of their total workforce, including contract workers. However, a stipulation requires that at least 5% of the total positions be reserved for new trainees and those holding skill certificates. The notification clarifies that if the reserved positions for new trainees remain unfilled, other trainees may be appointed to those vacancies.
