Reasons Behind the Change


The Railway Board emphasizes that the role of a Loco Pilot is highly demanding, requiring constant vigilance while operating a train. Technical knowledge alone is inadequate. A successful Loco Pilot must demonstrate quick decision-making, mental alertness, spatial awareness, and excellent memory. The CBAT is specifically designed to evaluate these mental and psychological traits. The Board has indicated that, with safety as a priority, candidates must also be mentally capable.


This change will significantly affect candidates who previously concentrated solely on written exam preparation. A poor CBAT score could hinder selection, even for those with strong technical scores. Conversely, candidates with robust reasoning skills and mental aptitude will benefit, making rote learning insufficient for success.
