Historic Achievement by Shakti Sharma



Shakti Sharma, an officer in the Indian Air Force, has made history by becoming the first non-medical female officer to achieve the rank of Air Vice Marshal, equivalent to a two-star rank in the Indian Armed Forces. She assumed the role of Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Education) at the Indian Air Force Headquarters on September 1, 2026.


A New Milestone for Women in the Armed Forces

With this remarkable achievement, Shakti Sharma has set a new benchmark for female officers across the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Previously, women reaching this level in the armed forces were primarily from the Medical Corps.


Career Journey Began in 1994

Shakti Sharma was commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994. Over nearly three decades, she has held various significant responsibilities, culminating in her historic rise to the rank of Air Vice Marshal.


First Female Principal of a Military School

Before this achievement, Shakti Sharma also made history as the first female officer to serve as the principal of a military school across all three armed forces. She was appointed as the head of the military school located in Kapurthala, Haryana, where she served from August 2015 to May 2017.


During her tenure, she guided hundreds of students with a strong sense of discipline, leadership, and patriotism.
