Revamping Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Education in India
Introduction to the New Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Course
The Central Government is set to overhaul the education system for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME). A new Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree program in AME will be introduced, starting as a pilot project in the academic year 2026-27. This initiative was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on March 30 between Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The goal is to position India as a global leader in Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO), thereby generating job opportunities for the youth in this sector.
Pilot Project Implementation
The AME education will be modernized and standardized to enhance direct employment prospects for students. Initially, the program will be rolled out at the GMR School of Aviation and the Air India AME Academy, with plans for nationwide implementation in subsequent phases.
Syllabus Development
The syllabus for the BSc course will be crafted by a consortium including Global Commission, Airbus, Safran, and the GMR School of Aviation. ENAC France and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are also expected to contribute to this initiative soon.
Workforce Preparation for Future Aircraft
Union Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu emphasized the significance of this agreement, noting that Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya is set to transform the aircraft maintenance landscape. With an anticipated fleet of around 3,000 aircraft, there will be a pressing need for skilled personnel, which this initiative aims to address.
Expansion to the Marine Sector
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this MoU will enhance talent development in aviation, catering to the needs for pilots and technical staff. Professionals from the Railways, Aviation, and Defense sectors are already involved with Gati Shakti University, and the Marine sector is expected to join soon.
Training for DGCA Officials
Gati Shakti University will partner with the DGCA to explore future-oriented research areas, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Additionally, training programs will be organized to equip DGCA officials with knowledge of emerging technologies and regulatory standards, fostering a strong connection between regulatory bodies, academia, and industry.
Enhancing Aircraft Maintenance Skills
Students will benefit from practical training in simulation labs and hands-on MRO experience while studying. They will also interact with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), which will enhance India's capabilities in aircraft maintenance.
